Chimney Repair
Brick chimneys are an essential architectural component in historic buildings. Like the old house itself, chimneys were constructed of coal-fired clay bricks assembled with lime mortar. After decades of exposure, the mortar joints between the bricks inevitably begins to fail. If allowed to deteriorate, old chimneys can threaten a building’s structural integrity.
If inappropriate mortar is used on historic chimneys, this will actually accelerate the rate at which the masonry deteriorates. Makeshift brick repair is often made with cement, which is commonly used in new construction but inappropriate for historic buildings.
