Owners of historic homes in Alexandria and Washington DC who look for energy savings search for the most efficient thermostat control system. This Old House plumbing and heating expert Richard Trethewey demonstrates four home automation systems that deliver comfort, convenience and energy efficiency.

Watch the video to see these choices:

1. A digital hard-wired thermostat allows you to program temperature and on/off cycles for heating and cooling systems.

2. A wireless digital thermostat is a wire-free way to control and program heating and cooling systems

3. A WiFi-enabled digital thermostat lets you use a smart phone to program heating and cooling systems, turn lights on and off, and lock and unlock doors from anywhere.

4. A WiFi-enabled energy monitor connects to the main electrical panel and is used to monitor electricity usage and cost. Also reveals how much electricity individual appliances are using.
